Circadian Rhythm
You’re probably familiar with the 24 hour circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is governed by the sun. When the sun comes up we start to produce cortisol to wake up. When the sun goes down melatonin kicks in to induce sleep. If you’re out of sync with your 24 hour clock it can have negative effects on your health. It has become mainstream to hear about the negative effects of blue light from our devices and the importance of deep sleep.
Infradian Rhythm
What we hear less about is how to nurture the 28ish day infradian rhythm of the menstrual cycle. The infradian rhythm is governed by the moon. The moon changes throughout the month the same way you do throughout your menstrual cycle. Just as it's important to keep a healthy circadian rhythm we also need to maintain a healthy infradian
rhythm. Throughout the month of your menstrual cycle, your metabolism, immune system, cortisol levels, and more fluctuate. We often try to ignore these changes so that we can perform at the same level every day. This can become draining and unproductive. As your body changes throughout the month you have different strengths. It's important to understand how to work with your monthly rhythm so that you feel your best.
I encourage you to track your menstrual cycle. You can make notes about how you are feeling throughout the month and start to notice if there are any patterns. Get in touch with your infradian rhythm and see if you can start living in a way that nurtures your monthly cycle <3
